Airedale Terrier
"history, English black and tan terrier, otter hound, largest terrier. "
THE AIREDALE WAS developed around 1850 by crossing the English black and tan terrier, now extinct, with the otter hound. The name comes from the river Aire, a watery otterscape near Leeds in England. If size and keen scent are the gift of his otter hound origin, then the Airedale must have gotten some of his talent elsewhere because he’s been used to hunt a variety of small and mid-sized creatures-namely water rats, weasels, foxes, and badgers. This largest of "earth dogs," or terriers, has been used on larger game too, often bounding deer and charging boar.
